Do you consider yourself to be a good person? Have you ever taken the good person test? Well now is your chance, here goes!
How many of the ten commandments can you remember? 3? 4? We are going to go through some of them to see if you really are a good person.
Have you ever told a lie? What do you call someone who lies? A liar, right!
Have you ever stolen anything? What do you call someone who steals? A thief, correct!
Have you every killed anyone? Most people would say, “NO!! Of course I haven’t killed anyone!” What about hate? Have you ever hated someone or called them a fool? Jesus said in Matthew 5:22, “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” See, God knows our thoughts and intentions of our hearts. To him, hatred is the same as murder.
How about commandment number 7, thou shall not commit adultery. Have you committed adultery? Have you ever looked at someone with lust? Jesus said in Matthew 5:27-28, “You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” There it is again, God knows our thoughts and the intentions of our hearts. To him, looking lustfully is the same as adultery.
Alright, lets stop there. If you were honest in answering those questions, you admit to being a liar, a thief, a murderer and adulterer at heart. That is only 4 of the ten commandments. Do you still consider yourself to be a good person?
If you died today, and someday you will die because 10 out of 10 do, and you were to stand in front of God who will judge you by the ten commandments, would you be innocent of guilty? Guilty! Would you be sent to heaven or hell? Sadly the answer to that is hell. Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Because of sin, mankind is destined to spend eternity in hell, suffering the full wrath of God.
But, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9
God doesn’t wish for anyone to go to hell. He did something so amazing because of the great love he has for us, his creation. Do you know what he did?
God came to the earth as a man, Jesus Christ, and lived the perfect life that you and I can’t. He suffered and died on the cross, then rose again on the third day defeating death. When we repent of our sins, ask forgiveness and turn away from them, and place our trust in Jesus alone to save us, we will be saved.
Luke 13:3 and 5 – “No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
Romans 10:9, “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Jesus alone is the only one who can save, “let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by this name this man stands here before you in good health. He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone. And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:11-12
We cannot ever attain holiness. We fall short every time. But because of Jesus, there is hope. If you are not a Christian, what is stopping you? You don’t know when you will die, you may not have tomorrow. Repent and believe today! Then read your Bible and obey what it says.
